Culinary Colours of the world

Today life seems all computerised and mobile phones etc so it is nice when young children take the time to enjoy writing, especially poetry.

The Young Poets of the Year Competition 2010 attracted several hundred entries on the theme of food.

My granddaughter Leona was runner up with her poem.

The world is a rainbow of colourful tastes,
A myriad of magical dishes,
Of sights and smells that inspire you to dream
Of all your culinary wishes.

Warm English Muffins for afternoon tea,
Some cucumber sandwiches too,
Brightly coloured ham and thick, squirty cream,
They explode in your mouth as you chew.

Italian pasta with a vivid red sauce
Herbs and garlic inside,
Pizza with tomato and oozy cheese,
Your taste buds sing as flavours collide.

Exquisite Thai rice and zesty, hot soups,
With fiery chilli and lots of green lime,
A tango of tastes dance on your tongue,
Tasting zingy and fresh every time.

A kaleidoscope of different spices
Combine to make an Indian flavour,
Mild and cool Kormas to biting Vindaloos,
Every mouthful is one to savour.

What a wonderful world we live in,
We are so lucky it is full of food,
Whether it’s sugary sweet or savoury,
There’s a dish for every mood.

You can journey all around the globe,
Without ever needing to roam,
The tastes of the earth can come to you
At your table in your very own home.

Ed’s note: Well done Leona, let’s hope we continue to see your poetry and name in print.
