WI - December 2010
Our October meeting gave us a chance to learn about why we collect 'pennies for friendship'. We all know that there is a collection tin at every meeting, but few of us knew where the money collected went. Now we know.
The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) offers friendship and mutual support. They educate and fund group projects on literacy, health education, nutrition, home economic, agriculture, income generation, water and sanitation, leadership and entrepreneurship. They fund individual scholarships, too, in social and community welfare.
Their consultative status with several of its agencies means they can represent members at the United Nations.
As members of the British WI we are all members of the ACWW and therefore support whole-heartedly the work they do with projects worldwide. This is why we collect our 'pennies for friendship'.
To understand some of the problems women face in war torn parts of the world, we were asked by our speaker, Janet Rose, who represents the Norfolk Federation of WI's on the ACWW, to carry out some role play; imagining ourselves in a similar situation if war was declared on North Elmham and how we would cope with the lack of shelter, water, food and sanitation.
As I write we are getting ready for our November AGM meeting, which draws us to the end of 2010. This is the meeting that is a good one to come along to if you are interested in joining North Elmham WI, as you can see all the interesting speakers and outings planned for 2011. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 24th November at 7.30pm at the Memorial Institute.
On 8th December we are holding our Christmas celebration with a meal at the Lenwade House Country Hotel.
May I take this opportunity to wish you all, on behalf of the WI a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.
