Gongs Galore
Reading the Honours List last month I was surprised at some of the names I read, some I thought oh yes, well done, for others I thought, why? I realise that we may not always be aware of how much voluntary or charitable work these people do, or how they are contributing to the National Economy.
Of course they do have to be nominated for an award and they can decline if they wish.
Then I began to think of all the unpaid, anonymous, ordinary people without whose help or expertise, our world would be a much harsher place to live in. Many of these deserve awards. I'm sure the list is endless, here are a few for a start that we have in our part of the world - you can add to them.
Societies and associations that we belong to, or patronise their meetings, have to be organised and run, often a thankless task.
All Parish Councils are run by elected people, but the work is voluntary.
Think of all the Charity shops that are manned by voluntary staff.
At some time or other many of us have spells in hospital - think of all the volunteers needed there.
How many of us have helped out in schools, either in the classroom or on trips or outings (more difficult now with Police checks I realise)
What about the army of Meals on Wheels deliverers and hospital car drivers...the list goes on and on.
Are you a good neighbour, do you keep an eye out for an elderly relative or friend so they can remain in their own home.
Do you help a neighbour with their shopping or garden?
And don't forget your Elmham News is delivered to you by a volunteer, for which we are very grateful.
Do make your own list; let's see who can think of the longest list of unsung heroes in our communities.
