Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was a navigator, coloniser and explorer from Genoa, Italy. His voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, starting in 1492, were funded by Isabella I of Castile and initiated the process of Spanish colonisation which fore-shadowed general European settlement of the 'New World'.
