The Montgolfier Brothers
16. The Montgolfier Brothers' Hot-Air Balloon Flight by Tish Moore
The first living beings to fly in a hot-air balloon were a sheep named Montauciel (Climb-to-the-sky), a rooster and a duck. The hot air was produced by burning straw and wool. The flight took place over Paris on 19th September 1783, watched by a huge crowd, which included King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. The flight lasted eight minutes, covered two miles and all of the passengers landed safely.
